The model 1860 cutlass served successfully during the Civil War through the Spanish American War and were probably used on some of the smaller naval vessels during World War II. Made by the Ames Company first in Cabotville and later in Chicopee, Massachusetts. The design for this cutlass was copied from the French naval cutlass used from before 1800 until boarding of enemy vessels was made obsolete. The French affectionately called it "Cuillere-a-pot" (the soup ladle) and the comparison is obvious. This plain cutlass was used by enlisted men and those with cutout U.S.N. were for the officers and were identical except for the initials. Brass mounted with a slightly curved sturdy blade, these weapons were compact and among the most serviceable ever used in the American Navy. Originally furnished with a wire wound leather grip - the cutlass has a fine balance, the cup shaped afforded maximum protection to the striking hand. A leather scabbard fastened with numerous copper rivets and hung from a frog completed the outfit. No cutlass served as long and was more efficient in its work than this plain boarding and landing sidearm.
The naval cutlass, though antiquated for purposes of naval warfare in the era of the steel vessels of the new American Navy, was still officially in use. The crews of the Spanish American War period were drilled in cutlass exercises, known as "single stick" drill.
The 1860 naval cutlass was apparently adopted by the U.S. Navy in approximately 1860. The new U.S. Navy cutlass was based on the cutlass then in use with the French navy. The word "cutlass" is derived from the term "curtal axe", an ancient heavy, but short weapon. The cutlass has the same characteristics. The cutlass was used in ship-to-shop melee, in boarding parties and to repel boarders. Made with good attention to detail by a former British military contractor in India, the blade is hand forged from American & British military spec. steel and will flex over 20° and return to true. This is an authentic reproduction of the cutlass designed by Ames and first carried in 1860. Its 25 1/2" blade and brass basket hand-guard were well suited for the close quarter combat of wooden ships and iron men. Leather scabbard has brass throat and tip, and comes with dark leather frog. 31 1/2" overall.
